How to Hold the Pick
Using a plectrum, more commonly known as a pick, is an essential part of guitar playing. Although there are many styles and players that prefer to use finger-picking and strumming, it is useful to to develop this technique as it will open up limitless possibilities in your playing.
Holding a pick is very simple and although there are many ways, we will focus on the simplest, tried and tested approach.
1. Hold the pick on the side of your index finger and make sure the point of the pick is facing the same direction.
2. Place your thumb down on the pick and make sure there is enough (but not too much) point coming outwards.
Overtime you will get used to the amount of pressure needed to hold the pick in place. As always, we aim for relaxed technique with as little tension as possible. The tricky thing is balancing the amount of pressure in your grip so that you are firm enough to keep the pick in place yet loose enough to have a nice relaxed motion.
Types of Pick
There are many types of pick and they come in all shapes and sizes, each with their own particular uses. To start off with I would recommend a standard sized, thin pick.
Thin picks are excellent for learning to strum and play very basic melody lines and riffs. These picks offer very little resistance which is ideal for beginners who are aiming to develop basic technique.
Harder picks are often used to play particular styles and techniques. These picks have more resistance allowing the player more control over the picking motion. Faster guitar licks and solos are a lot easier to play with harder, thicker picks.
